About

Adam Sweet – Luthier, Archetier & Global Supply Chain Strategist

Adam Sweet is the great-great-great grandson of Joseph Hatch — and like his ancestor, he’s carved out a life where craftsmanship, curiosity, and music intersect.

Born in Boston and raised in the classical music world, Adam began violin at age four. His early training began with the New England Conservatory’s pilot Suzuki program at Dana Hall School, continued through Rivers Conservatory in Weston (where he graduated in 1980), and included summers at the Apple Hill Center for Chamber Music, where he dove into Dvoล™รกk, Mozart, Bach, Mendelssohn, Brahms, and Schubert. By the mid-‘80s, he was playing viola with the Pioneer Valley Symphony Orchestra — but his journey had only just begun
From Brahms to bluegrass, Adam chased sound wherever it led. In the ‘90s, he co-founded Maple Ridge, a Greenfield-based bluegrass band, and later formed Woodkerne, blending folk tunes and English ballads with Irish roots. In 2004, he launched Celticado — a wedding duo that thrived for over a decade until life, and then the pandemic, changed the rhythm again.

But music has never left him. He still teaches violin and mandolin, passing on both technical precision and a love for storytelling through strings.

The Business of Sourcing Beautiful Things

While music shaped his ear, business sharpened his mind.

From 1986–1993, Adam managed beer, wine, and cheese departments at Bread & Circus (later absorbed by Whole Foods), learning the ins and outs of product sourcing, pricing, and consumer trends. That evolved into a role as national sales manager for Dr. Hauschka Cosmetics, where he spent three months in Germany immersing himself in production and brand philosophy — picking up German research methods along the way.

In 1998, he launched a consulting firm offering global market research, e-commerce development, and strategic sourcing. Along the way, he added a certificate in web design and development — HTML, JavaScript, and more — building websites from the ground up.

But one thread kept pulling him back: materials.

At Stamell Strings in Amherst, Massachusetts, he became sales manager and partnered with a horsehair importer — traveling the globe selling bow hair to violin makers in Montreal, London, Paris, Dublin, Frankfurt, Seoul, and Shanghai. Trade shows, logistics, and supplier networks became second nature.

Later, as purchasing manager at Tree Free Greetings, he curated sustainable holiday lines for retailers like Barnes & Noble and Whole Foods — sourcing seed-infused bookmarks, recycled glass ornaments from India, and eco-friendly cards. Complex supply chains? Tight deadlines? He thrives in that space.

A Trained Luthier & Archetier

What sets Adam apart isn’t just his business acumen or his deep knowledge of global trade — it’s that he’s also a trained luthier and archetier. Over decades, he’s learned the craft of making and repairing string instruments from the inside out.

That’s why he understands not just what goes into a mandolin, guitar, or violin — but what makes those materials sing. Ebony, rosewood, boxwood, horsehair, bone, steel… these aren't abstract commodities to him — they're the heartbeats of instruments.

And now, with tariffs disrupting traditional sources of key luthier supplies, Adam is helping fellow builders find alternative, ethical, and reliable sources for the materials they need to keep their shops running.

He’s not just a broker. He’s a connector. A researcher. A craftsman.
